After graduating with a degree in construction management, Laurence began his career with a metropolitan council. His initial involvement as a project manager on the Council’s own capital development programme provided a terrific grounding in all aspects of the infrastructure and property development process across a varied portfolio of predominantly industrial and leisure developments. A move towards the strategic side of development work followed with a lead role in developing the European funding plans for a South Yorkshire motorway corridor and associated employment land allocations, including those relating to a new civil airport. This experience of major strategic activity led to an appointment as director responsible for what was, at the time, the largest 14+ education project in the country, bringing a town’s FE College, the local education authority and the Government’s funding agency together to tackle major structural challenges in the delivery of secondary and further education. As well as developing plans for a network of community based learning facilities having modelled growth data projections over a 15 year period, the project resulted in the delivery of a 35,000m² new college campus on a waterside regeneration site.
After this nationally significant project, consultancy followed and over a 15 year period Laurence progressed to be a partner with a major international property consultancy responsible for a regional office. During that period he was seconded into the Department for Education and served as a regional director overseeing free school capital delivery in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber and East of England Region. The secondment provided a useful insight to the mechanics of government with regular ministerial interaction and responsibility for a large delivery team and capital budget.
In 2020, Laurence decided the time was right to leave the corporate world and become master of his own destiny. His desire to support clients with a bespoke and quality consultancy product has led to the establishment of Harte Recources Ltd.
